Weekly services held in the David and Miriam Mondry Building  in Oak Park at 15000 W. Ten Mile Road
OUR HISTORY RECORDED IN MICHIGAN HISTORICAL MARKERSCongregation T'chiyah was founded more than 25 years ago in the City of Detroit.   Its first site was rented space in the St. Mary's Community Center located in Greektown  near the site of the first Jewish religious services in Detroit.
We have subsequently rented space for regular services in a number of buildings that have historical  significance. Pictures of these sites can be found on a website devoted to Michigan historical markers.
First Jewish Service in Detroit
The first Jewish services in Detroit were held somewhere near the present site of Jefferson and  St. Antoine near the river. T'chiyah's first services and site were purposely chosen to be near that site.
St. Mary's School and Community Center
T'chiyah's first site was in the school and community center building across the street from the  Catholic church in Greektown. Reminiscent of medieval European Jewish experiences, our services  were frequently punctuated by the sound of a church bell. Unlike those earlier times, the sounds  of 20th century urban street music also wafted up into our sacred space.
Memorial Hall of the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Detroit's Cultural Center
While looking for a new site for services, we briefly rented space in the First Unitarian church's facilities.
Royal Oak Woman's Club
Before moving to our current location, we met at the Royal Oak Woman's Club, the oldest building in Royal Oak. (The local Swedenborgian congregation also holds weekly services in this building.)
